Effective Altruism Introductory Program
Hosted by EA Hungary
How can we do the most good? To explore this question, we offer a free, eye-opening, and rewarding 4-week program to students and professionals interested in improving the world.
Our program is an introduction to the principles of effective altruism. Group discussion meetings follow weekly readings. This course is an excellent opportunity for deeply engaging with ideas and strategies for effectively improving the world, and a great chance to meet with like-minded people.
We are looking for people with a drive to improve their impact on the world and who have the ambition to do the most good they can. Participants will combine the head and the heart, as they apply rigour and rationality to questions regarding morality and altruism.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Intro program:
-
Anyone can apply to our fellowship, regardless of whether they are university students, 10-12th grade high school students or people who have already finished their studies. There are also no restrictions regarding place of residence, nationality, educational institution or university programs. However, it is important that you are able to read English materials to a sufficient extent, as the weekly materials (online articles and book chapters) are only available in English. If you have already finished your studies, please write us an email at info@eahungary.com so you can join our fellowship for people in an early to mid-career stage.
-
You can participate in the fellowship regardless of where you live. Although our in-person events will be held in Budapest, the fellowship has groups that will stay online for the whole 4 weeks.
-
The daily materials will be available only in English. To read these, your English needs to be around the C1-level. (We do not ask for a language exam certificate though.) Groups discussing in Hungarian will also read texts in English, so sufficient level of ablity to read these materials is necessary. If you have no problem reading the following introductory article, we encourage you to apply! Introduction to Effective Altruism

Yes! The weekly meetups, as well as our other events are completely free. All reading materials, as well as the certificate you receive after successfully completing the fellowship are free as well. You don’t have to pay anything to take part in our fellowship.
-
During the fellowship all groups meet on a weekly basis with their mentor. During these meetings, the group will discuss the reading materials for a given day, which take about 2 hours to complete. The aim of these meetings is to get a good understanding of the materials, as well as to examine them from different perspectives and share our understanding and opinions with the group. Apart from these meetings, you will also have the opportunity to participate in social events where you can meet the other members of the community!
-
Your group will meet for conversations each week at the same time. These discussions take 90 minutes. We will have several groups running at different times during the week, so you can easily find a time that works for you. Before each session, you need to prepare the materials (readings, videos, exercises) for that week, this will take about 2-2.5 hours per week. The discussions will be based on the readings and exercises, so it’s very important that you find the time to complete them each week. So altogether this means a 3.5 - 4-hour commitment per week. Please consider this when applying!
-
We ask all applicants to attend at least 3 out of 4 meetings. If the usual time does not work for you, you can join another group for the day. If you can't make any of the groups, you will be required to send a few paragraphs of reflections regarding the day's readings to your mentor and schedule a 20 minute call with them. However, if you find that the fellowship is not for you, you can opt out any time.
-
The fellowship lasts 4 weeks, but for those interested in learning more, there will be additional sessions, that are optional. There will be an final event as well, where all the fellows will come together to meet each other, as well as the other members of the Hungarian Effective Altruism Community.
-
You can choose whether you prefer to attend sessions online or in-person. If you are based in Budapest, we recommend that you join one of the in-person groups, as previous fellows reported enjoying in-person conversations more. Online sessions are held on Google Meet.
-
At the end of the fellowship you will receive a certificate of completion. If you want, you can also apply to our in-depth fellowship, where you can further deepen your knowledge about effective altruism. You will also have the opportunity to participate in the events organised by the Effective Altruism Community in Hungary and abroad, such as monthly meetups and conferences!
